Where Artés now has been there, but 37 million years ago (m.), It cut off its communication with the ocean and evaporated, in a hot and very dry climate. In its place there was a large river basin that had no access to the sea, the waters that dropped it ended up evaporating. It was an extensive and flat depression, going from Central Catalonia to Navarra. In the north there was the Pyrenees, still undergoing training. The streams and torrents that descended from the surrounding mountains flooded the plains in rainy seasons leaving mud layers and fine sand; the water finished in the lowest zones forming lakes and lagoons subjected to a strong evaporation and that they could be dried completely. Meanwhile, the deposited sediments dried up and the iron they contained was oxidized by contact with the air, giving them a reddish color. Those materials are called "continental", as they were not deposited in the sea. Among the rocks that come from those sediments are those that we see in the vicinity of our town and part of the Bages, with an intense red color. In the attached schemes we represent the imaginary map of 34 m.a. superimposed on the current one, as well as the landscape in sight of the plane. We note that the rivers and mountains of this area did not have any similarity with the current ones, in the case of Artés, the rivers came from the south.
